Introduction to SlimStampen

In this manual you can read instructions for getting started with SlimStampen: creating an account and setting up lessons for your students.

Please read the manual carefully before you get started!

Create an Account

  1. Go to your university’s SlimStampen domain at [youruniversityname].slimstampen.nl (for example, https://rug.slimstampen.nl ). You can change the language by clicking on the flag icon at the top right. Click “CREATE ACCOUNT” to create an account.

  2. Return to the login screen and sign in with the email and password you used to create your account.

After you sign in, the homepage will appear.

NOTE: To create lessons on SlimStampen, you need to be registered as an instructor. When you have created an account, email feedback@slimstampen.nl and our support team will register your account as an instructor account.

Introducing SlimStampen to your students

Creating an account

Before your students can use SlimStampen, they need to register on the website. We recommend having your students register with their student email addresses. Additionally, you can tell your students to use their student number as the screen name. This will make it easier for you to keep track of your students’ progress statistics. If necessary, students can change their screen name and email address under ‘Profile’.

Tip: It can be helpful to provide your students with an example of your university’s student number and email format, e.g.: ‘Please use your student email address (a.b.lastname@student.university.nl) to create your account and use your student number (S123456) as the screen name.’

The Homepage

The “My Lessons” tab contains lessons you have created and practiced. The “Library” tab contains all created lessons and lesson groups that are available to you.

NOTE: The lessons you create can only be found at the domain where you create them, for example: http://rug.slimstampen.nl . Please make sure your students create an account on your university domain, and NOT one of the other SlimStampen domains, such as http://app.slimstampen.nl (where you can create your own lessons) or http://topo.slimstampen.nl (which contains topography learning material).

Language settings

Choose your language of  preference. This will adapt the homepage and display the lessons available in that language.

Lessons page

Find a lesson / lesson group

In the search bar at the top of the homepage, enter the title or the description of the lesson or the name of the instructor who created the lesson.

Create a lesson

Step 1 : Creating a lesson group

  1. On the homepage, click “NEW”. A pop up will give you the option to  create either a single lesson or a group of lessons.

  2. To create a single lesson (one independent set of around 20 facts), select “SINGLE LESSON” and continue to part b of Step 2 on the next page. For a group of fact sets, select “GROUP OF LESSONS”. This will take you to the “Lesson Group Editor” screen.

  3. Choose the language of the lesson group.

  4. Please use the formal course title including a year-indication as shown above. If set to “Private lesson group” only you (and people invited by you) will have access. Switch this off when you want your students to have access.

  5. Click “SAVE LESSON GROUP” to save your lesson group.

NOTE: Students can only find your lesson group if they have set their homepage language to the language that you have chosen for the lesson group. They can find your lesson group by changing their homepage language, refreshing the page and searching for your lesson group.

NOTE: If you select “Mastery Credits BETA” you can use the new, easier way to view students’ progress. This feature is still being tested, but is already available for use.

NOTE: “Practice Difficult” enables learners to practice the 20 most difficult items from various lessons in the lesson group. They can also earn mastery credits for this. However, we don't recommend this option when you have lessons of varying types (multiple choice and typing, picture cues and text cues, etc.).

Step 2 : Creating a lesson

  1. To create a lesson within the lesson group, scroll down and click “ADD LESSON”. This will take you to the “Lesson Editor” screen.

  2. Enter a title and description for your lesson.

  3. Choose the language of the lesson group. Students can only find your lesson if they have set their homepage language to the language that you have chosen for the lesson.

  4. Create the lesson you want by selecting options in the “Lesson Editor”. In the table below you can read more about the available features.

  5. For a guide to creating typing questions, continue to Step 3.I

  6. For a guide to creating multiple choice questions, see Step 3.II.The amount of choices between brackets determines the amount of choices that SlimStampen will display to learners. For example, if you select “Multiple choice (3 choices)” each fact will be presented with 3 choices: one correct answer and two distractors (incorrect answers).

“Lesson Editor” option

What does it do?

Offers new facts in random order

Switched on by default. If switched off, SlimStampen will introduce new facts to learners in the same order as you add them in the lesson (or in the same order as they are listed in the Excel file you upload).

Case sensitivity

Can be switched on if answers should be case-sensitive.

Spacing model

Set to “Optimal Spacing” by default. This model adapts spacing of facts to the learner's response time and accuracy. Select “Optimal Spacing (no study trials)” if you don’t want students to see the answer when a new fact is introduced. “Simple flash cards” does not optimize spacing.

Default learning time

Sets the default time for a learning session. Students can adjust this time to suit their personal needs.

“Answering method”

This option lets you pick the type of questions you want to create: typing, speaking (voice input) or multiple choice.

Tip: Instead of creating questions by hand, you can Import a lesson from Excel.

Step 3.I : Typing questions

NOTE: Try to keep to a maximum of 20 items per lesson. The introduction of new facts becomes difficult if a lesson has more than 20 items. If there are more than 20 items, please split the lesson into two parts.

  1. To add items to the lesson, click “NEW FACT” at  the bottom of the “Lesson Editor”.

  2. Under “Cue text” you can write a text question. To add an image or audio file, click the  icon and select a file from your computer. Images should be .png, .jpeg or .svg format. Audio files should be .mp3 or .wav format.

  3. Under “Answer text”, write the correct answer.

    • ADD ALTERNATIVE ANSWER” allows you to add multiple correct answers. Each of these answers will be shown to the learner when the fact is introduced and will be evaluated as correct when a learner enters it.

    • ADD ALTERNATIVE SPELLING” can be used to add alternative spellings that should be considered correct. These are not shown to the learner.

Step 3.II: Multiple choice question

“ADD ALTERNATIVE ANSWER” allows you to add multiple correct answers. Each time the fact is presented, SlimStampen will randomly select one of these correct answers to be displayed.

  4. Under “Distractor 1”, you can write a distractor: an incorrect answer option. You can add as many distractors as you want. To use images as answers, first insert the correct answer image by clicking the icon. After this uploads, the option to insert distractor images will appear.

NOTE: Recall the amount of choices you selected when creating this lesson. If you add more distractors than the amount selected, SlimStampen will randomly select which distractors to display each time the fact is presented.  If you add less distractors, SlimStampen will use correct answers from other questions as distractors.

Mastery credits [BETA]

SlimStampen measures students’ progress by awarding mastery credits. A mastery credit is awarded when, on any given day, a student has mastered all items in the lesson. SlimStampen judges mastery from the accuracy and response time of a students’ answers. How long it takes to obtain a mastery credit varies per learner and per lesson, but is estimated at around 30 minutes.

Students can earn one mastery credit per lesson per day.

Lesson group overview students

To see your students’ progress for all lessons in a lesson group, open a lesson group and click ‘statistics’.

In the ‘Statistics’ tab, you can see an overview of the total responses and the mastery credits obtained for each lesson. You can also view the first and last dates on which a credit was obtained by each student. This will give you an idea of the dates when students started and stopped their practice.

You can also search for a specific student’s name or email address. Furthermore, you can adjust this overview by selecting minimum and maximum responses and number of credits. You can download the full overview and you can also download the part of the overview you have selected by entering search terms.
